Ski-Touring & Ski-Mountaineering

Ski Touring

Iceland has become a popular destination for ski touring—and for good reason. Expect surprisingly good snow, runs that descend all the way to the ocean, long spring days, great food, and relaxed locals who love sharing their passion for skiing and mountains.

The most favoured area is the Troll Peninsula (Tröllaskagi) in the north, but ski touring is also excellent in the East Fjords and Westfjords.

The best time for touring is from late March into early May, with fresh powder not uncommon even at the end of the season.

Most mountains range around 1,000 m (3,000 ft), and it’s common to link several shorter runs throughout the day to enjoy more vertical and explore different aspects.

Your ski touring adventure can also be combined with heli-skiing, heli-assisted touring, or cat-assisted touring for extra elevation and variety.

Stronger ski tourers can aim for bigger objectives such as Iceland’s highest summit, Hvannadalshnúkur, or Eyjafjallajökull on skis. The iconic Snæfellsjökull glacier is a more moderate but beautiful and rewarding summit.

It’s ideal to combine your ski adventure in Iceland with exploring the country and visiting some of its most famous sights.
