Ice Cave Tour – Solheimajokull Glacier

Ice Cave Tour

Explore the ice cave hidden within Sólheimajökull, a living glacier that reshapes itself with every season. Formed by winter storms, meltwater, and the glacier’s slow natural movement, the cave offers a rare glimpse into ice that’s constantly transforming. No two visits are the same; what you see today won’t exist in quite the same way again.

Description

The Colours and Shapes of the Ice

Inside, the ice has that deep, clear blue we Icelanders never get tired of. Light filters through the glacier in soft shades, and the walls curve and twist in shapes created by nothing more than time, weather, and the glacier’s own slow breathing.

Expert Icelandic Guides at Your Side

Your journey to the cave is led by our exceptional Icelandic guides, many of whom have years—sometimes decades of experience on these glaciers. At the head of our glacier team is Iceland Luxury Tours’ lead glacier guide, the most experienced and qualified in Iceland, who also trains guides from across the country to become stronger, safer, and more skilled on the ice. With this level of expertise behind every tour, you’re in the best hands possible.

Gear Provided — Just Bring Warm Clothes and Proper Boots

We provide all the necessary glacier equipment so you only need to arrive prepared for Iceland’s conditions: warm, layered clothing and sturdy hiking boots that can properly hold the crampons. The walk is easy and fits most people.

We will provide:

  • crampons
  • ice axe

  • helmet

A Moment Inside Ancient Ice

Standing inside the cave, surrounded by ice older than any of us, you get that familiar Icelandic feeling: small in the best possible way. It’s a simple experience, but a special one something you carry with you long after you’ve stepped off the glacier.

As a Day Tour or a Multi-Day Tour

We can do this tour as a day tour from Reykjavik or we can include it as an activity on a multi-day tour where you can experience more remarkable sites in this area like Thorsmork Nature Reserve, Vestmannaeyjar Islands or parts of Fjallabak Highlands.
