3 Day Highland Adventure

Explore the Unique Highlands of Iceland on a Private Tour

Over 70% of Iceland is categorised as highlands.  To say you have seen Iceland you obviously have to visit the highlands, glaciers and volcanos.  On this tour you get a perfect mixture of the main highland areas in the SW parts of Iceland.

Day 1 – Landmannalaugar – Eldgja

We head into the highlands and our first destination is Landmannalaugar highlands which is known for its stunning rhyolite mountains and geothermal activity.  You can dip into the natural hot spring pool but keep in mind that the there basically no facilities for changing clothes so bring your big towel!  From Landmannalaugar we head into beautiful Jokuldalir valleys that will keep you amazed by its diverse and unique natural beauty.  Our next formal stop is in Eldgja which is the largest volcanic canyon in the world.  We can do a short hike to Ofaerufoss waterfall before we head to the lowlands.

Day 2 – Lakagigar – Fjadrargljufur Canyon

We spend most of the day exploring Lakagigar a 27 km (17 miles) long fissure consisting of 130 giant craters that were formed during a massive eruption in 1783-84.  As a result over 50% of the life stock in Iceland starved to death from a disease called gaddur and approximately 20% of the population died from hunger.  Skaftareldar eruption or Fires of Skafta is the main reason for many people immigrating to Canada and N-America in the aftermath.  This area is very interesting and ideal for some light hiking and exploring.  On the way back we will also make a short stop at Fjadrargljufur canyon.  For those interested the famous American singer Justin Bieber made a music video in Fjadrargljufur for his song “I’ll show you” in 2019.

Day 3 – South Coast Wonders

Today we drive through Eldhraun lava field from the eruption in Lakagigar which is the largest lava flow in the world of 565 sq. km. (218 sq. miles).  Today it is covered with very thick and green moss which is softer than basically anything.  We will stop in Vik small town, Reynisfjara black sand beach, Dyrholaey promontory, Skogafoss and Seljalandsfoss waterfalls before we head back to Reykjavik.
