Blue Lagoon
Blue Lagoon – Geothermal Powered Luxury
Explorers of Iceland quickly become familiar with the occasional pillars of steam rising from the rocky landscape. The island is so alive with geothermal activity that in some areas, steam and boiling hot water bubble and burst through any available crevice. It is in one such area on the Reykjanes peninsula that the Blue Lagoon sits, a breathtaking product of Iceland’s geothermal nature and human ingenuity.
Serendipity
Interestingly enough, the Blue Lagoon wasn’t planned. When the Svartsengi Geothermal Power Plant began operating back in 1976 the goal was to harness the power of geothermal energy, not create a magical lagoon. Workers began boring down into the earth to tap into the hot water below when the unusual blue-white muddy water burst forth. It turned out that this mineral rich water couldn’t be used by the power plant as it coated and clogged the plant’s machinery. As a result, the water was diverted into the surrounding lava field creating a lagoon that was the forerunner to the Blue Lagoon.
Soak It All In
A magical oasis in a vast field of craggy lava, the Blue Lagoon boasts a spa, restaurants and hotel. You can easily while away an entire day luxuriating in its waters and indulging in spa treatments. The Blue Lagoon offers the unique experience of having resort amenities at your fingertips while being nestled within the ethereal Icelandic landscape. You can escape into a secluded area of the lagoon where you are surrounded by lava rocks, covered in mud and algae and just as easily retreat to a private lounge where you can enjoy a view of the lagoon through floor to ceiling windows.
Variety is The Spice of Life
In addition to soaking in the warm, blue-white, mineral rich waters, you can slather on a silica mask from the mask bar and grab a beverage at the in-water bar. Warm up in the sauna if you like a dry heat or the steambath if you like it humid. In keeping with the surrounding environment, there is even a waterfall to stand under or simply float by as you get an in-water massage.
The Blue Lagoon offers a number of treatments and activities. Let Iceland Luxury Tours handle the details. All you have to do is relax and enjoy
