Whale Watching Tours

Whale watching is possible from various locations around Iceland. Because of the migratory behaviour of the bigger whales summer and autumn months are usually best for this activity.Weather is also an important factor in whale watching and during the winter months storms are more frequent.

Whale Watching Locations

For whale watching  The Reykjavik area in the south and in the north Eyjafjordur and Husavik are the most popular places for whale watching. During the winter months Snæfellsnes has been popular for seeing Orcas.

 

Clothing and gear

For whale watching warm clothes are necessary. That is usually always the case in Iceland. The whale watching tour operators also provide warm clothes on request. However hats and gloves are usuallly not provided. Life vests are of course provided.

Difficulty

Very easy unless you suffer from seasickness. Usually the tours are done in boats that hold 40 to 60 people.  However some whale watching tours are done using smaller so called Rib boats that go faster and are more bumpy. They are not suitable for persons with back problems, pregnant women or small children.

Length

The whale watching tours usually last for 2 to 3 hours.

Age Limit

There is no specific age limit for the bigger whale watching boats. For the smaller Rib inflatable power boats age limit is often 10 years or a height restriction of 145 cm.
